The Greater Beulah Community Center, Inc. (GBCDCI) recognizes the youth within the Capitol Heights community has specific needs that can be addressed in the “Never Left Behind” Tutoring Program. The Tutoring Program offers assistance to elementary, middle and high school students with their studies in the areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), computer skills, arts, math, literacy, reading comprehension and many more areas. Our volunteers consist of adults and high school students earning their Learning Service Hours.
The students have access to a computer lab and resources which give them access to learning and coaching websites such as:
- Khan Academy
- Curriculum Pathways
- SAT Prep
We use a structured schedule for each session. First, students are assisted with their homework assignments then after which they are provided the opportunity to reinforce academic areas they find challenging. We encourage the students to read more. We will obtain the books recommended by the public schools elementary, middle and high book lists and place them in the “Friends of Capitol Heights” Library.
At the end of each session, the student and parents are provided a progress report detailing the student’s tutoring experience and recommendations on improving their learning experience.
Scheduled tutoring sessions are held September through May of each year on the 2nd and 3rd Saturdays from 10:00am to 1:00pm.
